Creating Great Battery Connections

 

 

Avoid problems in your Holley Fuel Injection Kit installation by following Doug's advice on the most important connection in the whole system: the one from the ECU to the battery!

 

Transcript: The battery of the vehicle is the best place by far to connect the main power for the ECU. This is the most important thing in the wiring process. It is very critical to have clean, proper, power and ground supplies for the ECU. The ECU is not a light bulb, for example, where you can connect power and ground up to anywhere and if the power and ground is poor the bulb's just dimmer. The internals of an ECU contain delicate microprocessors and many other components that rely on clean, sound power and ground.

 

By connecting the main power and ground to the battery, the battery acts as a capacitor, or a filter, for the power that goes into the ECU. If you connect it somewhere else on the vehicle, you have the probability that you'll be getting poor ground or dirty power into the ECU. This can cause improper ECU operation or, in worst case, it can damage the ECU.

 

Batteries are either a top-post style or a side-post style. This battery has both top posts and side posts. If you have a side-post battery, go to the auto parts store and purchase some of these adapters. They are available at any auto parts store, anywhere, and they are very inexpensive. And these install the battery cables into the sides of the battery and also give a stud to mount the ECU power and ground. Now that we have these adpaters installed we can easily install the ECU's main power and ground.

 

This is the proper installation of the ECU's main power and ground to a top-post battery. Simply connect the ECU's power to the positive terminal of the battery and connect the ground the negative terminal of the battery.

What are your thoughts on using both a power post and ground post that come directly off the battery on top post batteries to hook the ECU power leads?

For years Holley has maintained a singular narrative when it comes to connecting ECU power and ground: Directly to the battery and no where else. But clearly that narrative has changed a bit recently with the introduction of their new Power Distribution Module. The PDM was introduced as part of the Sniper 2 EFI System, but is worthy of consideration for installation with any EFI system.

The PDM provides (among other things) both power and ground connections for the ECU. So, why is not connecting directly to the battery okay now? While it is possible to make other power and ground connections that will work, one can be assured that the battery will be the one guaranteed-acceptable place to do so. But using the included heavy-gauge wire between the battery and the PDM (and, we would suggest, placing the PDM relatively close to the battery) is going to be nearly as good capacitive power filtration while greatly cleaning up one's wiring.

Be assured that great battery connections are very much in Holley's financial best interests. Poor connections caused by ill-advised wiring result in unnecessary technical support calls, returned product, and bad reviews--many of which would be necessary had the system simply been installed correctly. That Holley has released this new PDM (and the great price-point they have set for it) tells me that this thing works to facilitate sound wiring solutions. And that is good for everyone.
